Your smile is important, so you want it to look as natural and healthy as possible. Today’s dental technologies provide many different options to help you do just that; one such technology is a dental crown. Dental crowns may be suitable for you if you have a damaged or weakened tooth.
What Is a Dental Crown?
A dental crown is a type of dental restoration that covers your entire tooth. Dental crowns are designed specifically for your mouth to achieve a natural look. Our office works closely with lab technicians to create a dental crown that is aesthetically pleasing and will last for many years. Although they can be made of different materials, most dental crowns are made of porcelain to closely mimic the look of a natural tooth.
Who Is a Candidate for Dental Crowns?
If you have any of the following issues, you may be a candidate for a dental crown:
- Broken teeth
- Cracked teeth
- Fractured teeth
- Large dental fillings
- Severe tooth decay
- Weakened teeth from root canal therapy
What Is the Dental Crown Procedure?
Our South Chico Dental Care staff wants you to be completely comfortable during your dental crown procedure. The first step to ensure your comfort is to ensure your mouth is completely numb.
Once you are numb and comfortable, the dentist will:
- Remove the damaged part of your tooth.
- Shape your tooth so the new dental crown will fit.
- Take impressions of your tooth so the lab can create a custom crown.
- Fit you with a temporary crown until your new crown is created.
- Once your new crown is back from the lab, we will bond it to your tooth so that nothing can get between your natural tooth and the crown itself.
How Do I Care for My Dental Crown?
Once your dental crown is in place, it’s important to take good care of it by brushing and flossing regularly, keeping regular dental appointments, and avoiding sticky and hard foods that might damage it.
