Child's First Dental Appointment | South Chico Dental Care

The big day is here!

It’s time for your child to have that first dental appointment. We know you are probably feeling both excitement and apprehension, and that’s totally normal. We’d like to take a minute and give you an idea as to what you can expect when it comes to children’s dentistry at our Chico dental practice.

What To Expect From Your Child's First Visit

According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, each child should visit a dentist by the time his or her first birthday rolls around. Why so early? This first appointment is really just a “meet and greet,” also known as a “happy visit.” We’ll meet your child, give them a ride in the dental chair, and take time to answer questions and discuss any of your concerns.

We don’t expect your child to be cooperative enough to allow for cleaning or examination at this visit, and that’s okay. At this stage, we really just want to take a quick peek and check in with you to make sure everything is going okay.

As you return for future visits, or if your child is older when they come to us for their first visit, we’ll start to incorporate more direct care, based on your child’s cooperation. From the toddler age on, we really want to build trust with your child. Too often, lifelong dental fear is triggered by unfortunate early experiences, and we want to avoid that.

Your Child's Comfort is Our Priority

Children are also sensitive to your fear and anxiety, so if you have any worries about the dental office, let us know so we can better prepare you to answer your child’s questions before you arrive.

During these appointments, we’ll give kids a quick tour of the office and chat with them about their home care habits. Using kid-friendly language and techniques, we’ll take x-rays and perform a simple examination and cleaning, depending on your child’s level of cooperation. We’ll also discuss preventive treatments that can help your child avoid cavities, such as fluoride and sealants.
